(HorizonPost.com) – A CNN poll released on Tuesday found that while most voters approve of Trump being indicted on federal charges, the majority believe the charges were motivated by politics, CNN reported.
While 61 percent of respondents approve of the Justice Department’s decision to indict Trump, 71 percent believe that the decision to charge Trump was motivated by politics, with 54 percent saying politics played a major role while 17 percent saying it played only a minor role. Only 18 percent believe politics played no role in the indictment.
What’s more, a majority from each party believes that the indictment was motivated at least in part by politics, including 92 percent of Republicans, 67 percent of Independents, and even 53 percent of Democrats.
The majority of respondents, 55 percent, believe that Trump’s actions with the classified documents were illegal while 30 percent said Trump’s actions were unethical but not illegal. Only 15 percent said Trump did nothing wrong.
When asked if Trump should continue running for president in light of the indictment, 59 percent of all respondents said he should drop out of the race while 41 percent said he should continue his campaign.
But among Republicans, the numbers are different. Only 26 percent of Republican respondents believe that Trump should drop out of the race because of the indictment while 54 percent said Trump’s indictment won’t impact their decision to support his candidacy because a president’s effectiveness is more important.
And while Trump continues to lead the GOP field in early polling, since Trump’s arraignment, his support has softened, with 23 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents saying they would not consider supporting Trump under any circumstances, a 7-point jump from the May CNN poll that found only 16 percent of Republicans would not support Trump in the primary.
Trump’s favorability has also declined among Republican and Republican-leaning respondents, dropping from 77 percent in May to only 67 percent in Tuesday’s poll.
