(HorizonPost.com) – From time to time, when the FAA declares a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) around a location, certain areas of the airspace over America are closed off to all but authorized aircraft. These can take place during Super Bowls and other large events, or in locations where the president or vice president might be, which is what happened in this case.
President Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, when USAF F-16 fighter jets roared overhead. The president pointed it out to the crowd, saying, “they gave the president a little display.”
It was actually an intercept of a private aircraft that had been unresponsive to radio communications and the Air Force pilots were ordered into the area. They needed to fire off a series of flares to get the attention of the plane’s occupants which prompted the president’s reaction.
The events of 9/11 proved to the world that airplanes can be turned into weapons at a moment’s notice. While a private aircraft could not cause that kind of devastation, the people charged with protecting government VIPs always act with an overabundance of caution.
