(HorizonPost.com) – During the first few weeks of his administration, President Joe Biden decided to use the power of his pen and bypass any potential criticism from Republican members of Congress. Since January 20, he has prioritized the reversal many Trump policies — especially regarding immigration.
On February 2, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released an announcement that “encourages all individuals, regardless of immigration status, to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.” While providing the vaccine to all the people who are willing and able to take it could be an important part of slowing the spread of the virus, some conservatives, such as Representative Steve Scalise, are worried it could set a dangerous precedent.
In an interview on Fox & Friends, Scalise said this new development may encourage a flood of illegal immigrants to come to the border and try to cross to get the vaccination, straining America’s already precarious distribution system. He also released a statement saying that we should instead be focusing on vaccinating vulnerable Americans and frontline workers first, rather than “putting non-citizens ahead of American citizens.”
Americans are already having a hard enough time getting vaccines. Can we really afford to vaccinate illegal immigrants at the same time?
