DeSantis Gets Closer To Being More Popular Than Trump
(HorizonPost.com) – As he nears a 2024 presidential run, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is narrowing the formerly enormous polling gap with former President Trump.
A new Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey on Monday showed DeSantis’s increasing strength into sharp focus: the Florida governor’s position in a fictitious 2024 Republican primary increased by 11 points since last month, putting him at 28 percent.
Meanwhile, Trump’s popularity dropped 9 points to 46%. The poll shows a significant change in the former president’s political strength as he launches his third run for the White House in six years, although he still has a double-digit advantage over DeSantis.
DeSantis has been gaining ground month after month, and now Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll, claimed that he is seriously undercutting Trump, and Trump may well lose if they both run.
Trump made good on a promise he has been making since he left the White House over two years ago by announcing last week that he would run for president of the United States again in 2024.
While he had wanted to begin his campaign from a strong position, the announcement came as many Republicans began to doubt his influence within the party and his suitability to lead the GOP into the next election.
That’s partly due to how the midterm elections in 2022 turned out. Republicans had long projected a “red wave,” but it ultimately didn’t happen. While the GOP secured a slim majority in the House, the party could not retake the Senate, and several prominent candidates who Trump backed lost their contests.
Trump’s overall favorability has decreased by five percentage points since October.
According to the most recent Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll, 44% of voters think favorably of the former president, while 49% think negatively of him.
Governor Ron DeSantis is exhilarated by his reelection victory in Florida, with 46% of Republican voters supporting him. He would be the undisputed front-runner for the nomination.
Republican insiders claim that Governor DeSantis hasn’t decided whether or not he will run for president in 2024. There is a lot of hostility between President Donald Trump and the governor of Florida, who he has called an “ordinary Republican.”
