Israeli Leader Walks Political Tightrope Over Gaza Retaliation

(HorizonPost.com) – President Joe Biden finally took his first step into the Middle Eastern conflict that began when the terrorist organization Hamas launched rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip. During a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the commander-in-chief claimed the United States fully supports the Jewish nation’s right to self-defense. However, he expressed concerns over civilian casualties and the destruction of a high-rise that housed the Associated Press (AP) and other media outlet offices — and, allegedly, a Hamas intelligence unit.

Netanyahu realizes he must work to minimize those casualties, so he risked the security of the attack by giving the journalists a one-hour warning to evacuate. However, in an interview on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, May 16, he said his country must “degrade” Hamas’s “will” to use rockets to settle disputes.

PM Netanyahu noted the Israeli army goes to great lengths to prevent civilian casualties, but Hamas has historically used citizens as human shields when launching attacks from schools and office buildings. He asserts that they do this intentionally “because it gets the international community” to blame Israel instead of them.
