Liz Cheney Labels Elise Stefanik ‘Total Crackpot’

(HorizonPost.com) – Former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney accused House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stafanik of being a “total crackpot” this week for changing her tune on the January 6 riot at the Capitol to appeal to Trump supporters, The Hill reported.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Cheney shared a link to the statement Stefanik released on the day of the riot, in which she described the attack as “truly a tragic day for America.”

In her statement, Stefanik condemned the “dangerous violence and destruction” to the Capitol and asserted that violence was “absolutely unacceptable and anti-American.” She called for the “perpetrators of this un-American violence and destruction” to be “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Stefanik’s statement runs counter to her more recent claims about the January 6 attack. In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” following the 3rd anniversary of the riot, Stefanik referred to the Jan. 6 prisoners as “hostages,” echoing remarks Donald Trump made the day before when he demanded that President Biden “release the J6 hostages.”

In posting the link to Stefanik’s statement, Cheney described it as “a rare moment of honesty” and said that the Republican Conference Chair would one day need to explain “how and why she morphed into a total crackpot.”

Stefanik is a moderate Republican with a conservative Liberty Score of only 48%. Despite that, she is on the shortlist for Trump’s 2024 running mate.

In recent weeks, Stefanik has been campaigning for the former president while she continues to be one of Trump’s most aggressive defenders.

After Donald Trump confused Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi during a campaign event in New Hampshire, Stefanik tried to smooth over the gaffe by claiming that, just like Nancy Pelosi, Haley “is relying on Democrats.”

Following Trump’s victory in New Hampshire, Stefanik released a lengthy statement calling for Nikki Haley to end her “failing campaign” and “unite behind President Trump.”

In a statement to The Hill, a spokesperson for Stefanik dismissed Cheney’s remarks, saying that her “only remaining relevance” was having to “answer for her role in deleting and hiding evidence” from the January 6 select committee investigation.
