Report: Al Qaeda's Leader Has Just Died

( – The Al Qaeda terrorist group has reportedly lost the top two men in their organization. One of them reportedly by natural causes that might be related to his asthma and the other by the bullets of two unknown assassins.

The Leader

On November 15, several news outlets began reporting that Ayman al-Zawahiri may have succumbed to “breathing issues” based on information from unnamed sources in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He assumed control of the network on May 2, 2011, when members of the elite United States Navy SEAL Team Six killed Osama bin Laden in a raid at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

According to the FBI’s most wanted poster, al-Zawahiri founded the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which then merged with Al Qaeda in the late 1990s. Under his leadership, the terrorists lost many of their allied groups, leading to a steep drop in international activities. With the vacuum created by his death, the issue of whether the group will fall apart or see a resurgence remains unclear.

Second in Command

Just days before reports of al-Zawahiri’s demise, sources finally began running stories about a shooting in Tehran, Iran from the night of August 7, 2020. Up until that point, officials had kept information about the shooting from news sources. Even so, quasi-official news channels in the country made attempts to hide the identities of those killed in the very public attack.

It became clear, however, the victims were Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah (aka Abu Mohammed al-Masri) number two in Al Qaeda’s chain of command, and his daughter Miriam — also reported to be a high-ranking member of the group. Witnesses reported that two riders on a motorcycle pulled up next to his car and opened fire. While neither confirmed nor denied by Israel or the United States, rumors indicate an Israeli Mossad team carried out the killing using American intelligence.

There are many unanswered questions at this point, not the least among them is whether President Donald Trump or Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden will be officially declared the victor in the recent election. The person who leads the United States historically has a strong impact on the activity of terrorist organizations.
