Ron DeSantis May Have Violated Federal Law

(HorizonPost.com) – Allies of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are allegedly pursuing legislation to conceal the Governor’s spending. Senate Bill 1616, sponsored by DeSantis ally Senator Jonathan Martin, will provide a publication exemption for costs incurred through transportation and protective services, among other measures. Florida State Representative Jeff Holcomb introduced similar legislation.

Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s annual Report on Transportation and Protective Services has declared that the Governor spent more than $6 million for protective services for his family during the fiscal year 2021 – 2022.

Laura Loomer, a pro-Trump activist who stood for Congress in 2020, also alleges that DeSantis is breaking state law with his spending and fundraising activities. Loomer claims that DeSantis is hosting fundraising events at the Governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, which is a breach of state law. Florida law states, “No person shall make, and no person shall solicit or knowingly accept any political contribution in a building owned by a governmental entity.”

Loomer is well known for her anti-DeSantis position. In March, she called the Governor a “tyrant” when she was refused access to a book signing event in the Sunshine State. DeSantis organized the event to promote his 2022 publication The Courage to be Free. “Police showed up and they told us that we were going to be cited and arrested for trespassing if we didn’t leave because DeSantis didn’t want us inside. It shows that he’s a tyrant,” she said.

It is not the first time Trump supporters have accused DeSantis of breaching regulations. A pro-Trump PAC filed an ethics complaint against him in March, alleging that he breached Florida law by running a “shadow Presidential campaign.” State law in Florida requires political candidates to resign from a post before they can run for another if the two terms of office would overlap. The PAC contends that DeSantis is using the cover of a book tour to disguise the fact that he is seeking nationwide support for an undeclared White House bid.
