Russia Undecided on Position Toward Extremists, Spokesperson Says

(HorizonPost.com) – While the world watches the drama unfolding in Afghanistan and foreign nationals scramble to leave the country before an August 31 deadline, the political machinations of countries around the world continue. According to a spokesperson, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Russia would take a wait-and-see attitude before formally recognizing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He wants to see how they’ll treat the citizens of Afghanistan and Russian diplomats.

A decision to legitimize the terrorists as the true government of the country would be somewhat ironic. After all, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) moved into the country in 1979 to help the then-communist government in Kabul battle the Muslim guerrillas. According to Global Times — one of China’s state-run media outlets — Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation about the current developing situation in Afghanistan.

In the same report, Yang Jin of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said the two recognize the need to address what’s happening in Afghanistan. He added that the two countries can have a role to play in restoring peace in the region after the withdrawal of the US. The Hindustan Times reports the Russian leader also talked with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They agreed to remain in communication and to prioritize “peace and security” as the situation develops.
