Mitch McConnell Accused Of Abandoning Blake Masters By Ted Cruz
(HorizonPost.com) – Texas Senator Ted Cruz accused Mitch McConnell of abandoning Blake Masters in the Arizona Senate race in the recent midterm election. according to The Epoch Times, he said that the minority leader put his personal interests above the interests of the party.
During an episode of his podcast, “Verdict with Cruz,” the senator lamented the opportunity Republicans had to bring about a landslide election where they control a 30 to 50 seat majority in the House and have at least 53 senators.
“We had a generational opportunity,” he said.
Republicans won the House by a narrow margin, securing just six more seats than Democrats. Republicans also won the popular vote by three million. Sean Trende, a senior election analyst at Real Clear Politics wrote that Republicans did better with black and Hispanic voters, but that it did little to translate to winning more seats.
The Senate got away from the GOP after stunning defeats in Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. But Cruz blames McConnell for pulling money out of Arizona and abandoning Blake Masters in a race that should have been won, calling the minority leader’s actions “indefensible.”
The Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a political committee with close ties to McConnell, reportedly cut funding by millions of dollars in the state in the weeks leading up to the election. The move allegedly came after Master’s said that he would vote against McConnell as the next majority leader if the GOP took back the upper chamber.
During the Arizona primaries, Master’s said he would vote for Sens. Hawley or Cotton for the position over McConnell, who has also recently faced ire from former President Donald Trump for his lack of leadership.
“And so, Mitch would rather be leader than have a Republican majority,” Cruz said. “If there’s a Republican who can win who’s not going to support Mitch, the truth of the matter is he’d rather the Democrat win.”
Master’s also said of McConnell that while he was good at blocking Democrats and pushing through judges, he is not good at legislating.
