(HorizonPost.com) – Polls conducted after President Joe Biden’s disastrous performance at the CNN debate last month show that the incumbent is in far worse shape heading into the nominating conventions than he was before millions of Americans saw him meltdown on live television.
Just four days before the CNN debate, former President Donald Trump had a one-point advantage over Biden in the Real Clear Politics polling average, 46.2 percent to 45.2 percent.
As of July 7, the RCP polling average had Donald Trump 3.4 points over Biden, 47.5 percent to 44.1 percent.
Even worse for President Biden, however, is his job approval.
As of July 8, Real Clear Politics polling average showed Biden with an average approval rating of only 38.8 percent while 58.1 percent disapprove of the president.
No incumbent has shown an approval rating that low at this stage of the election season since former President George H.W. Bush in 1992. What’s more, no incumbent except for Donald Trump has trailed this far behind in the polls at this point in the election since Jimmy Carter’s failed reelection bid in 1980.
Meanwhile, President Biden continues to insist that he will not drop out of the race, despite rising calls for him to step aside.
On Monday, the president sent a letter to congressional Democrats notifying them that he had no intention of dropping out.
A New York Times/Siena College poll released last week showed that Trump’s advantage over Biden jumped to six points, 49 percent to 43 percent, a three-point increase since the last NYT/Siena poll conducted before the debate. Much of the lost ground has come from a drop in support among Independents and even Democrats.
However, not everyone is so confident that defeating Joe Biden in November would be enough to turn this ship of state around.
In a July 8 op-ed at Red State, columnist Matt Funicello argued that restoring the country would take much more than simply electing Donald Trump as president.
Funicello urged Republican voters to also focus on local elections, arguing that if Republicans don’t fight to take back state and local government, it won’t matter who is sitting in the White House.
