(HorizonPost.com) – Day Three of the Republican National Convention focused on national security and foreign policy and featured veterans and Gold Star families, many of whom blasted President Joe Biden’s foreign policy failures in his first term.
Among the speakers was Florida Republican Rep. Michael Waltz, a six-term congressman who served for 27 years in the military and was the first former Green Beret to be elected to Congress.
In his speech, Waltz blasted President Biden over his national security failures, suggesting that the world was a much more dangerous place under Joe Biden than it ever was during the time he served in uniform.
Waltz praised Donald Trump’s foreign policy successes during his first term in office, noting that Trump “defeated ISIS, broke Iran, stood with Israel” and America’s allies, and “made China pay.” He jokingly pointed out that under the Trump presidency, there were no “spy balloons” flying over the United States.
Waltz lauded Trump’s America First foreign policy and suggested that it played a role in preventing Russian President Vladimir Putin from moving on Ukraine the way he did under both Obama and Biden.
Waltz also countered President Biden’s claim about Trump’s so-called failures in foreign policy, listing off the former president’s achievements in his four years in office, including freeing hostages held in North Korea without paying “billions of dollars” to get them back.
Waltz hit President Biden hard for the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, most notably the Abbey Gate terrorist attack in Kabul that killed 13 US service members. He blasted Biden for refusing to meet with the families of those killed.
By contrast, Waltz noted that Donald Trump did meet with the families at his request.
He recounted that Trump set aside an hour to meet with the families but ended up spending over six hours with them. During the meeting, Trump promised that there would be a full investigation into the Abbey Gate attack and vowed that he would deliver what Biden has not: accountability.
The tearful Waltz told the delegates that after the meeting, two of the family members said it had been “the best thing that had happened to them” since they lost their sons.
