(HorizonPost.com) – Border Patrol reportedly apprehended 700 Chinese nationals crossing the border in the San Diego sector during the third week of April, Breitbart News reported.
According to Customs and Border Protection, over 26,000 Chinese nationals have been apprehended crossing into the United States since the current fiscal year began just over six months ago.
A source with Customs and Border Protection told Breitbart that the number of Chinese nationals apprehended in FY2024 was three times what it was at the same during the last fiscal year, making China one of the top ten countries of origin for illegals encountered at the border.
The source told Breitbart that most of the Chinese apprehended at the border get released into the continental US almost immediately since China refuses to take them back.
In recent months, immigration authorities only sent one repatriation flight to China, the source told Breitbart, adding that Customs and Border Protection has no choice but to release them into the United States.
The 700 Chinese nationals that crossed into Southern California during the week of April 15 alone was double the total number of Chinese who crossed during FY2021 when only 342 Chinese nationals were encountered.
The source told Breitbart that intelligence has yielded no explanations for why the number of Chinese border apprehensions has significantly increased.
While speaking at the Vanderbilt Summit in Nashville last Thursday, FBI Director Christopher Wray warned of the threats posed to US infrastructure by China. Wray said China planned to strike a blow against civilian infrastructure as a way to cause panic among the American people. However, Wray added that the threat to infrastructure was mostly through cyberattacks by Chinese-backed hacker groups like Volt Typhoon.
In an interview with Breitbart News last year, retired Army Col. Kenneth Ballard, a former intelligence officer, said the lack of intelligence surrounding the marked increase in apprehensions of Chinese nationals was concerning. He said while many could simply be dissidents fleeing an oppressive regime, the Biden administration lacks the willingness to investigate the surge.
