VP Harris Under Pressure: Calls for Gaza Ceasefire Gain Momentum

(HorizonPost.com) – Former campaign aides from Kamala Harris’ 2020 presidential bid are reportedly circulating a letter and collecting signatures calling for the vice president to “seek an immediate ceasefire” in Israel’s war against Hamas, Politico reported.

The draft letter obtained by Politico claims to mourn the Israeli civilians brutally murdered by Hamas but quickly shifts gears to accuse the Israeli government of exploiting their deaths “to stage a retaliatory and genocidal campaign” against Palestinian civilians.

The Biden administration has been unwavering in its support for Israel’s right to defend itself against the Iranian-backed terrorists that killed more than 1,400 and kidnapped at least two hundred in the October 7 terrorist attacks.

President Biden reportedly scrapped an early version of his October 12 address to the nation because it attempted to engage in “both-side-ism” over the issue.

While the White House has remained committed to supporting Israel, the Democrat Party as a whole has become deeply divided over the issue of Israel and the Palestinians.

Even before the October 7 attack, Democrat sympathies had already shifted away from Israel. A March Gallup poll found that a plurality of Democrats, 49 percent, were more sympathetic to the Palestinians while only 38 percent of Democrats were more sympathetic to Israel.

Several progressive lawmakers have defied the White House during the latest conflict, demanding that the president call for a ceasefire while showing skepticism toward Israel and sympathy for the Palestinians in Gaza.

While appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal warned that the president’s unwavering support for Israel would hurt him with Democrat voters in next year’s election.

Jayapal claimed without evidence that the “majority of Congress” and the American public are “quite far away” from President Biden’s position on Israel.
