Elon Musk Quietly Launching An AI Company

(HorizonPost.com) – Twitter owner Elon Musk is developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) company. The controversial businessman continues, however, to warn of the unseen implications of the technology. He is said to be in talks with Canadian AI developer Jimmy Ba about establishing a company called X.AI, which will develop technology for consumer products and business solutions.

The news comes only days after Musk said that advancing technology, including AI, must be heavily regulated to prevent a threat to the public. Speaking to Bill Maher, the billionaire said that anything posing a potential hazard to people should be subject to formal oversight and accountability. In addition, companies must refrain from cutting corners, he added.

Musk recently cut ties between Twitter and OpenAI, the company leading the field in artificial intelligence. Musk was one of the founders of the organization but resigned from its board of directors five years ago.

OpenAI developed ChatGPT, which has gained a foothold in the AI market. Its growth prompted Musk to collaborate with other technology leaders and write an open letter urging caution. The letter appeared on the website of the Future of Life organization, which campaigns to ensure technology enhances, rather than compromises, human life.

The letter asks questions about whether humans should create technology just because we can. For example, it asks how many jobs people we should sacrifice in the name of convenience. “Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete, and replace us?” it asks.

The note was signed by hundreds of leading figures in the technology field and called for a 6-month moratorium on AI development. It said that systems should only be developed and made publicly available if we can be sure they will not have a negative, or even disastrous, impact on human life. It also states that if tech companies don’t voluntarily slow down, governments should force them to do so.
