NYU Student Invests $10K in Florida Commute for Internship

(HorizonPost.com) – A freshman at New York University has been traveling to Florida every weekend to do an internship at the Naples Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the New York Post reported.

In an interview with “Varney & Co.” on Fox Business last week, Vincent Campanaro explained that with internship programs so competitive, he knew that he would have a tough time finding an internship in hospitality in the New York City area.

Campanaro is not majoring in hotel management or hospitality. He told Fox Business that as a freshman, he still does not have the credentials or skills to obtain an internship closer to NYU.

Calling internships a “luck of the draw,” Campanaro said even if he applied to every internship available, he still probably wouldn’t have gotten one in New York State.”

Instead, he estimates that his six-month weekend internship in Florida will likely cost him over $10,000 in travel expenses alone by the time it ends in April.

Campanaro said at times the travel has been difficult with the headaches of booking flights and making connections. He said there were times when he slept at the airport and had to scramble to book a new flight when the ticket price increased.

According to Campanaro, he has been spending about $500 for each weekend trip, noting that the cost was bare-bones since Naples is a pretty expensive city.

Each Friday, after his final class ends at 12:15 p.m., Campanaro heads to the airport for a flight to Naples. He typically gets back to his dorm on Sunday evenings at about 9:00 p.m.

Campanaro’s long commute may have been worthwhile, however. He told Fox Business that he has learned so much about the customer-centric philosophy of the Ritz-Carlton, like being able to anticipate the guests’ needs.

Campanaro recounted his experience traveling every weekend in a March 3 column at Business Insider, explaining that each task he takes on has been “driven by sincere interest and ambition” to use each day to discover, learn, and grow.
